Good Morning,

Has anyone driven to Durban recently?

What is the state of the roads?

Roadworks?

TIA

Not recently but generally they excellent. Actually a drive I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to... the holiday for me, starts when I leave home at 5am on route to Ballito...

Johannesburg to Ballito btw

Actual road itself is not bad, I just find the drive unpleasant.
If not unpractical/unaffordable I would advise flying.

So the road from JHB to around PMB should be largely all good.

From PMB to DBN though, you will have to contend with extensive road works, the road itself is good but there is lots of traffic because its down to 2 lanes most of the time.

For the past 30 years, since I was a kid, I don't remember there not being roadworks there. Still have no idea what they're fixing/building...

There is always roadworks on the N3, basic maintenance and stuff... the scale from PMB to DBN at the moment is next level, they're expanding the road quite significantly.

That's what they've been saying for the past 30 years. And when there's an accident, it still gets closed with a queue forming all the way to Estcourt...

Pretty good if you stick to the highways. Van Reenen's Pass is a joy at the moment.

Once you're into KZN things get a little more exciting. They spend R1 on road maintenance for every R3 they pocket.

Thank you,

I am planning on leaving at 03h00 tomorrow morning, delivering a vehicle to a customer down there.

The biggest concern are the trucks and the truck drivers who have no idea how to drive on highway roads with the level of inclines and declines the N3 has safely

Stick to speed limit and don't pass on double solid lines when there are lots of trucks. Lots of traffic cops. Specially before and after Pongola.

Unless you take the newcastle road.

After Heidelberg you can floor it , none of the cameras are working , slow down when you pass Harrismith
