The headline is effectively saying that the Democrats gave in to the Republicans on the border. This is not as already been discussed numerous times. Many Republicans regarded the border control measures as too weak.

Is something not better than nothing though? Or do they prefer that nothing is done? Does the bill make things worse or does it improve even slightly?

Also how come this border stuff is always a crisis around election time?

I don't know why you're even trying to pretend that Republicans had some kind of principled objection to the deal when they explicitly stated that they were simply unwilling to make Biden look good in an election year. What a joke.

The concessions made essentially give the CBP the most power its ever had. You might be distracted by the 5000 number but single men claiming asylum not being able to be paroled and resources to reduce asylum processing from years to months is a massive concession.

1. It takes care of the "military aged men".
2. No influx or "invasion" being single men which make up the majority.
3. Resources for expedited deportation and processing.

Totally weak. Rather have the current system. Plus Trump doesn't want to give Biden a win.

Because the House has already passed a bill last year on the border crisis. HR2 - Secure Border Act of 2023. Does the Senate bill come close to the provisions of the House bill? No.

Doing nothing is better than applying a fig leaf of a fix that doesn't substantially address the issue when the primary obstacle to reform is that people are intent on frustrating any effective solutions.

Hint: Biden doesn't need the Republicans to make himself look good, he can just re-enact the Trump executive orders that he repealed and take all the credit. :giggle:

What absolute crap. The only arguments against the bill were ones that completely misrepresented what it actually said. AKA strawman arguments.

The ONLY reason the bill didn't pass is because Republicans care more about kissing Trump's rapist ass than they do about America.

Please be specific on what specifically in HR2 that the bipartisan bill falls short on?

Be specific - which ones? And please, remain in Mexico is no longer an option as they can no longer assist- it's been found unconstitutional there.
 
Inclusions not in Senate bill.

1. Under H.R. 2, employers would be required to verify — under penalty of prison — that all their workers were documented.

2. H.R. 2 would require the federal government to wall off at least 900 miles of the U.S.’s roughly 2000-mile border with Mexico, resuming all Trump-era plans that were interrupted by the former president’s electoral defeat in 2020.


To do so, the bill would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to waive all legal requirements — such as environmental review or historical site review — to get the wall built as quickly as possible.

3. It would require DHS to reestablish family detention, and once again allow families with children to be detained indefinitely.

4. Bar funds from being disbursed to NGOs that “facilitate[ ] or encourage[ ] unlawful activity,” defined to include unlawful entry, or that facilitate transportation, lodging, or immigration legal services for people who are inadmissib

And so on.
