Big Sixty60 app revamp coming

Shoprite is in the process of rewriting its popular on-demand grocery delivery app Checkers Sixty60.

This was revealed in an off-the-cuff remark by Shoprite Group CEO Pieter Engelbrecht during an earnings call on the company's interim results in early March 2024.

Probably will allow for a debit order payment system.
That wouldn't necessitate redeveloping the app from scratch.

Redoing the UX wouldn't require it either. Frontend devs can do a huge amount without impacting the backend.

I assume it's some boring reason like updating the tech stack, unifying dev teams, consolidating platforms, bringing outsourced dev work in-house or something like that.

I think the app is great and the only real issue I have is searching. I do get the odd & irrelevant products occasionally. But I tend to stick to my standard order anyway.

One thing that would be cool is having a shopper only but the identical item. A bought my girls a Barbie & Paw Patrol face cloth … and I received two grey clothes.

I’ve also ordered shampoo and got conditioner - but I think that’s a shopper issue too

Maybe the shopper is part of the group that does not exert a lot of effort?

The rollout of 6060 just as Covid started must have massively accelerated their plans for expansion

They probably want to rebuild the app now to ensure its longevity for the next 10 years

And to incorporate all the knowledge gained in the last 3 years back into it to make it better

I'm thinking they are adding some AI functions to improve search, product descriptions, replacements and recommendations

Best bit is, they send you 10% off voucher codes and they are unable to redeem them. Met with “The system is new” and “my store is the only one affected, go to another store”. I swear, Checkers, Pnp and Woolies. I don’t know which one is better. Planning to shift to some Spar spend now to test those waters.

Having multi store support would alleviate stock issues. Especially since checkers seems to be building stores everywhere in my area.

Likely they are re-writing the app because:
1) they have the money and demand to do it.
2) they have competitors desperate to eat into their share of the pie
3) it likely was developed rapidly with Covid and there is bad technical debt.

It could also be them wanting to move development in house or something like that.
