Fastest fibre-to-the-home packages in South Africa

The fastest fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) packages South African residents can get offer download speeds of 1Gbps, with prices starting at R1,197 for an asymmetrical package with 500Mbps upload speeds.

MyBroadband compared high-speed fibre prices from 16 fibre network operators (FNOs) using the latest pricing of Internet service provider (ISP) Afrihost. We only included packages with download speeds of 500Mbps or higher.

Afrihost was chosen as it offers a wide selection of FNOs and is not only one of the biggest ISPs in South Africa, but also enjoys high ratings from many of its users.

Packages were split into two main segments based on their download speeds — 500Mbps to 750Mbps and 751Mbps to 1Gbps.

We found that Link Africa and Zoom Fibre had the cheapest 500Mbps packages available through Afrihost.

The former’s symmetrical 500Mbps package and the latter’s Zoom asymmetrical product with a 250Mbps upload speed were both priced at R1,097 per month.

Think Speed and Balwin Fibre had the most expensive 500Mbps lines in the category, at R1,417 and R1,427, respectively.

Evotel and TT Connect are the only FNOs in the category 500-750Mbps category with speeds higher than 500Mbps.

For R1,347 per month, South African residents with Evotel coverage can get a symmetrical 600Mbps line through Afrihost.

TT Connect offered a symmetrical 750Mbps package through the ISP for R1,847, the most expensive FTTH product in this segment.

Cheapest top-end packages

For higher-speed fibre connections, Zoom Fibre’s 1Gbps package was the most affordable on Afrihost in the 751Mbps to 1Gbps category.

Its asymmetrical 1Gbps package with 500Mbps upload was R100 cheaper than the next most affordable option — Metrofibre’s 1Gbps packages, which cost R1,197 per month.

Depending on their location, customers will connect to the Metrofibre Nova or Nexus network. In either case, they will get an upload speed of 500Mbps.

For R1,497, Frogfoot’s 1Gbps package is the most affordable symmetrical plan available through Afrihost

Evotel is the only FNO to offer a line speed lower than 1Gbps in the segment. Afrihost’s sells its symmetrical 850Mbps line for R1,547 per month.

TT Connect and Vumatel’s 1Gbps packages are the most expensive in the 750Mbps to 1Gbps category.

TT Connect’s symmetrical 1Gbps line is priced at R2,247 per month on Afrihost, while the ISP charges R2,347 for Vumatel’s 1Gbps package with 500Mbps upload.

It is important to note that Vumatel offers another 1Gbps package with 250Mbps upload speeds, priced at R1,497 from Afrihost.
