South Africa’s cheapest car insurers

1st for Women, Budget Insurance, and King Price offer the most affordable car insurance premiums in South Africa.

This was our finding after comparing monthly insurance premiums from South Africa’s top vehicle insurers using the Hippo car insurance quote tool.

Hippo pulls quotes directly from car insurance providers to give you a wide selection of premiums and cover within a few seconds of entering your details.

This makes it a simple and uniform way to compare car insurance prices.

Testing parameters

For our research, we used the details of a 29-year-old male who had been driving for just over ten years.

He parked his car in a locked garage in a Centurion estate, had never had a claim, and had been signed up for car insurance for five years.

After setting up this profile, we entered the year, make, model, description, and type of cover required for a wide range of car models.

We used the base models of several of South Africa’s most popular cars — several of which were in the top 20 most-sold cars in the country in 2023.

We requested a quote for comprehensive cover on each car, and Hippo produced results from 11 insurance companies for each model.

In the table below, we have listed the 11 quotes for each car and highlighted the three lowest (green) and highest (red) monthly premiums for each.

Our results show that 1st for Women, Budget Insurance, and King Price were the three cheapest options almost every time, with Auto & General also making an appearance.

Absa and Nedbank were consistently the most expensive insurance options, though they had the lowest excess.

The excess amounts for each insurer are listed below:

  • 1st for Women: R7,400
  • Absa: R5,000
  • Auto & General: R7,400
  • Budget Insurance: R7,800
  • Dialdirect Insurance: R7,400
  • Iwyze: R6,250
  • King Price: R6,500 or R7,500
  • Nedbank Insurance: Minimum R5,000 or 5% of claim amount
  • Old Mutual: R6,250
  • Pineapple: R6,200 or R6,250
  • Virseker: R7,400

The excesses were the same for each insurer across the vehicles, except for King Price and Pineapple, which had minor variations.
