Bob Shop beats Takealot, Everyshop in online tech price comparison

South African shoppers looking to buy tech items online get the best pricing from Bob Shop and Takealot, a MyBroadband analysis has revealed.

We compared prices for ten tech items common to Takealot, Everyshop, and Bob Shop’s stores to determine which was the most affordable.

Our analysis showed that Bob Shop was often the cheapest, with Takealot second. JD Group’s Everyshop was the most expensive across the board.

Bob Shop, formerly Bidorbuy, rebranded in March 2023 through a partnership with uAfrica. Together, Bidorbuy and uAfrica created Bob Group — an integrated South African e-commerce marketplace aiming to compete with Takealot.

When shopping on the platform, it is important to confirm that the seller is legitimate and well-rated when buying items over a certain value.

Anyone can register to sell on Bob Shop, but the platform has a Buyer Protection Programme to offer shoppers some peace of mind.

There is also a wide range of pre-owned products sold on the platform, and it is important to confirm that the product is new if you don’t want a secondhand product.

Everyshop launched in April 2021 after a testing period that began in March that same year.

JD Group CEO Peter Griffiths said the company aimed to offer South African online shoppers a wide array of product categories in one place.

“With the support of our existing retail businesses we have partnered with some of South Africa’s best-known and loved brands,” he said.

This year, JD Group said that although Everyshop continued to trade and serve a small and loyal customer base, it would make no new investments “at this stage”.

Everyshop offers products across various categories, including electronics and appliances, furniture, fashion, footwear and DIY.

Takealot is a well-known and established e-commerce platform that launched in June 2011. The Naspers-owned online retailer also offers products across a wide range of product categories.

Tech price showdown

Across the ten items we compared, Bob Shop offered the best pricing for seven, often by a large margin.

For example, a third-party seller on Bob Shop is selling the EcoFlow Delta 2 portable power station with 1,024Wh of capacity for R15,999. The seller has a 100% rating across 123 reviews.

Takealot offers the next-best pricing of the three stores at R17,499 — R1,500 more than Bob Shop.

Bob Shop was also significantly more affordable for the Apple iPhone 15 Pro 128GB, 10.9-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE 5G, and the Xbox Series X console.

It had the iPhone 15 for R25,499 — R3,989 and R4,300 less than Takealot and Everyshop, respectively.

Similarly, its pricing was over R1,000 less than Takealot and Everyshop for the 10.9-inch Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE 5G.

Bob Shop sells the Xbox Series X console for R9,530, compared to R10,995 at Takealot and R12,999 at Everyshop.

Takealot is the cheapest for three of the ten items, making Everyshop the most expensive of the lot.

Takealot charges R8,699 for the 55-inch CU7000-series Samsung 4K Smart TV — R291 less the Bob Shop and R2,300 less then Everyshop

It also offers the best pricing for the 27-inch 280Hz G2723H-series Dell gaming monitor at R6,299, compared to R6,999 at Everyshop and R6,974.85 at Bob Shop.
