South Africa’s favourite online stores

MyBroadband research has confirmed that Takealot and Amazon are the favourite local and international online shops among South African tech enthusiasts.

A recent survey by MyBroadband asked more than 2,800 South African tech enthusiasts about their online shopping habits.

Shopping from local stores is still the most popular option, with 68% of respondents saying they only shop locally.

Only 3% prefer shopping internationally, while the other 29% order from local and international stores when doing online shopping.

Local shopping

Takealot is easily the most popular online store in South Africa, with 62% of participants preferring it above the rest.

Respondents appreciate Takealot’s extensive range of products, competitive pricing, and reliable services, including quick and hassle-free delivery and efficient return policies.

They also value the convenience, variety, and overall positive shopping experience provided by Takealot.

Checkers Sixty60 was the second most popular, with 22% of the votes, while its competitor, Pick n Pay Asap!, only received 5%.

Both received high praise for the convenience of being able to do grocery shopping without leaving the house, with emphasis on quick deliveries and the ability to pick delivery slots.

Customers especially enjoyed Checkers Sixty60’s app, as it is user-friendly and quick to use.

PnP Asap! users were impressed with regular discount vouchers for items and delivery costs.

International shopping

Amazon was the clear favourite internationally, with 51% of the votes.

Chinese shopping sites are quickly gaining ground against it, with Shein and Temu receiving 22% and 14% of the votes, respectively.

Amazon is preferred because of its extremely wide range of products and the ease with which the shipping and costs are handled.

Shein and Temu received similar praise but lacked the trusted reputation that Amazon had built up.

Temu also currently offers free shipping, which pulls in a lot of customers.
