Google Drive bug causes months of stored data to vanish

Some Google Drive users have reported that files they recently uploaded to the platform disappeared — as if their Drives have reverted to a snapshot from around April/May 2023.

These frustrated users took to Google’s support forums to complain, and many say they have lost recently saved data and folder structure adjustments.

“My Google Drive files suddenly disappeared. The Drive literally went back to the condition in May 2023,” one user posted.

“Data from May until today disappeared, and the folder structure went back to status in May.”

Many others commented, saying they are seeing the same.

“I pay extra each month to store folders in the cloud so that it is safe, so it is devastating that all my work appears to have been lost,” another Google Drive user said.

According to several posts, Google Drive activity logs don’t show any recent changes, confirming that the users never deleted the files.

Google volunteer support agents responded to the complaints and said support engineers were investigating the issue but did not provide an estimated restoration time.

They recommended that those affected avoid making changes to the root/data folder until the situation clears up and the cause of the problem is found.

“I will continue to monitor the behaviour of reported the issue from other admins and schedule a callback tomorrow same time hoping there is progress within the day that I can deliver before our Google Meet session,” a Google support agent said.
